Face Masks & Balaclavas
Australian riders face two very different challenges depending on the season — brutal UV exposure in summer and biting wind chill in winter. Our face masks, balaclavas and neck gaiters are built to handle both ends of that range, so you can cover up properly whatever the calendar says.
Which Type Do You Need?
- Summer UV protection: Lightweight ice-silk fabric with UPF50+ ratings that cools on contact — ideal for the peak-UV months when Australia's skin cancer rates are highest.
- Winter windproof coverage: Fleece-lined full-face balaclavas that block wind chill on early starts and late finishes.
- Neck gaiters: A lighter, more versatile option for mild mornings or layering under a helmet without full face coverage.
What to Look For
Breathability around the mouth matters as much as warmth or sun coverage — a mesh panel prevents overheating and glasses fog-up on longer rides. A wider eye opening also keeps your field of vision clear, which matters more than most riders expect until they've worn a mask that restricts it.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a balaclava for sun protection, or just sunscreen?
Fabric coverage is more reliable than sunscreen alone — it can't sweat off or wear thin mid-ride, and UPF-rated fabric blocks the vast majority of UV for the entire ride.
Will a balaclava make me overheat in summer?
Not with the right fabric. Ice-silk and mesh-panelled designs are built to cool rather than trap heat, unlike winter fleece styles.
